A lot of authors can’t justify a $199 tool before they’ve sold a single copy. This is a roundup of KDP research Chrome extensions that don’t require paying anything, checked live on the Chrome Web Store rather than copied from someone else’s list. Install counts, ratings, and marketplace coverage below are all first-party, pulled directly from each extension’s own listing (and in one case, from its own source code) on the date this post was checked.
Why “free” needed checking, not assuming
Two extensions that show up in almost every other “best free KDP tools” roundup turned out, on closer inspection, not to belong in one:
- KDSPY (80,000 installs, 3.7★) states directly in its own Chrome Web Store listing: “KDSPY v5 is NOT free to use and requires a paid account.”
- KDP Spy by Book Bolt (50,000 installs, 2.4★) installs with no listed price, but only works if you log in with an active Book Bolt account, and Book Bolt’s own help materials describe it as “an absolute freebie for paying Book Bolt subscribers.” The free trial requires payment details upfront and auto-bills if you don’t cancel.
Both are popular, well-known names. That’s exactly why it matters to say plainly: showing up free in a Chrome Web Store search isn’t the same as being free to use. Neither is included in the list below.
The genuinely free tools
Titans Quick View (70,000 installs, 4.1★, 65 ratings) overlays BSR, price, and review data across Amazon’s book pages, with a niche-scoring calculation and Excel export for search results. No account, no paid tier found. Its listing describes support across all Amazon marketplaces.
Titans Pro (40,000 installs, 3.6★, 64 ratings), from the same team, focuses on keyword-side research: Amazon search-suggestion expansion, estimated search volume, and a demand/opportunity score, also with one-click Excel export.
KDP Miner (9,000 installs, 4.2★, 13 ratings) covers 11 Amazon marketplaces (US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Canada, Australia, India, Singapore, UAE) plus Audible, analyzes up to 45 keywords in one pass, and includes a cover previewer for comparing your cover against competing listings.
Kip Scout (10,000 installs, 4.3★, 27 ratings) is free to use with no account required, though it offers optional integration with its maker’s Dibbly Create platform for saving research. Its real limitation is coverage: it currently works on three marketplaces, US, UK, and Canada, confirmed directly from its extension code, not just its own description.
BookBloom (456 installs, no ratings yet) leads with a privacy angle: BSR sales estimates, a niche viability score, and a KDP-policy compliance checker for titles and descriptions, all computed locally in the browser rather than sent to a server.
NicheIntel Pro by Adigy (55 installs, 5.0★ from a single rating) is small and new, but legitimate: search-page analysis across 11 marketplaces, sales estimates from BSR, and author/publisher profiling, all processed locally.
KDP Quick Scout (this extension) adds BSR and multi-format price tracking with trend charts, a one-click AI niche analysis grounded in real competing listings, and keyword research including a backend-keyword-slot builder, across 14 Amazon marketplaces. No account needed for the on-page data; signing in is only for AI analysis or cross-device sync.
The freemium middle ground
AuthorScout (1,000 installs, 5.0★, 3 ratings) doesn’t fit cleanly into either bucket above, so it gets its own line. With no account at all, it shows instant BSR, sales estimates, and book age on 20 marketplaces, free to use as-is. Creating a free account unlocks a daily “Profitable Titles” feed and BSR checks on 9 marketplaces (10 per month); a $9.99/month Pro tier removes those caps and adds book tracking. If you only ever use the no-account tier, it belongs on the free list above; the deeper features don’t.
How install count and rating relate
Looking at installs and ratings side by side, the pattern doesn’t sort the way you’d expect:

The two highest install counts on this table, KDSPY and KDP Spy, also carry the two lowest ratings: KDP Spy sits at 2.4★, the lowest here, and KDSPY at 3.7★ is below every free tool except Titans Pro. Install count measures how many people clicked “Add to Chrome” at some point, not how many people are happy with what they got, and it says nothing about whether a tool is honestly priced. Ratings on very small samples (1-13 reviews) swing easily on a handful of opinions too. Neither number should be read as more than one data point among several.
How to pick one
Marketplace coverage narrows the field fast if you don’t publish exclusively in the US: Kip Scout covers three markets (US, UK, Canada), KDP Miner and NicheIntel Pro cover eleven, AuthorScout’s no-account tier covers twenty, and KDP Quick Scout covers fourteen. If you publish outside the US, UK, and Canada, check a tool’s specific list before installing it. Kip Scout is the clearest example of a tool that simply won’t show you anything at all outside its three supported markets, and coverage varies enough across the rest of this list that it’s safer to check than assume.
Beyond that, it mostly comes down to what kind of answer you want on the page:
- Just BSR, price, and reviews on the page you’re already looking at, no history: Titans Quick View, KDP Miner, BookBloom, or Kip Scout (Kip Scout evaluates existing search-result listings, the same kind of job as these three, rather than expanding keyword suggestions).
- Keyword and search-suggestion expansion specifically, typing in a seed phrase and getting related search terms back: Titans Pro.
- Price and rank history over time, not just a snapshot, for free: KDP Quick Scout charts a book’s BSR and price over days or weeks at no cost. AuthorScout also tracks and charts history, but only on its paid Pro tier, not the no-account free version.
- A synthesized written report rather than raw numbers to interpret yourself: KDP Quick Scout’s AI analysis is the option here, though you should test it against a niche you already know well before trusting it on one you don’t.
- A KDP-policy compliance check on your title and description: BookBloom is the one tool here that offers this.
None of these replace a $199 tool’s search-volume database if that’s what you need. But for on-page BSR data, niche scoring, and keyword discovery, there’s a free option for most of what a first-time KDP niche search requires.
